Could you describe how expanding your professional network has helped you attain success?
“While I was pursuing my CEBS designation, I joined my ISCEBS local chapter and attended events. Back then, all events were held in-person, which gave me the perfect opportunity to network with benefit peers and get ideas from hearing about their challenges and administrative practices. Attaining the CEBS designation, maintaining my membership and attending the annual ISCEBS Benefits Symposiums has expanded not only my professional network, but also my understanding of the importance of continuously learning and staying abreast of what’s new in the benefits field. As benefit professionals, it’s important that we understand that we are most effective when we broaden our network, remain current on new or pending legislation, and stay abreast of new and upcoming benefit trends.”
Could you share some insight about how pursuing your CEBS designation demonstrates that you’re a lifelong learner and an expert in your profession?
“The best part about being in benefits is how much things change—from new laws to new benefits and technology. It’s a field that keeps you on your toes. The CEBS designation shows your commitment to learning, to the benefits profession, to your employer and to the employees you support.”
Could you share a story about how you prepared for your CEBS exam and applied what you learned to your work?
“How I prepared really depended on the course. In general, I used the Quizlet app, which really was helpful in preparing me for the tests. For a few of the RPA designation courses, I signed up for the Online Study Groups With Instructor Support, which were also very helpful. I also involved my manager as I was learning. It’s hard to believe there was a time when I didn’t know what an IRS Form 5500 was. I remember asking my boss to help explain to me what it is and how it’s prepared. She took the time to pull out prior forms we had submitted and walked me through them. In a sense, because I worked in benefits while I was pursuing by designation, work was also my classroom!”
Could you describe how earning your CEBS designation has supported you in your role and professional growth?
“Attaining your CEBS is an excellent way to set yourself apart from your peers and makes you an attractive candidate when searching for your next role. Attaining your designation is more than a personal goal—It also is a benefit to your organization. Being able to demonstrate your understanding of benefits, new laws and emerging trends makes you an asset to any organization, which ultimately changes how you are perceived by leaders. Being perceived as a trusted benefits professional who invests in your continuous learning and who has built a network of other benefits professionals is a recipe for continued advancement and opportunities.”
