Interruptions can set back your progress. You either never get started to begin with or make less than your best effort because too many things are competing for your attention. Minimize distractions to truly get focused and make headway with your Certified Employee Benefit Specialist® (CEBS®) studies.
- Aim to monotask. Multitasking overloads your cognition, slowing you down and worsening your retention of new content. Focusing on just one thing at a time enhances your productivity. Schedule an appointment on your calendar solely for your CEBS studies, set a goal for what you would like to achieve during that time and honor that commitment.
- Set the scene for success. In addition to the textbook and Study Guide for your course, gather any study supplies you wish to use such as a folder, a notebook, a blank deck of flashcards, a highlighter and a writing utensil. Have your favorite beverage or a bottle of water on hand. Take a few minutes to put away any visual clutter in the area where you’re going to study before you begin. If you’re going to use the digital Study Guide, close any additional open tabs in your web browser.
- Put technology to work for you. Depending on how you use it, technology has the potential to be a distraction or a powerful tool for learning. To enhance your learning with technology:
- Mute your smartphone and electronic devices so you aren’t interrupted by calls and notifications.
- Set a timer on your smartphone for the duration of your study session. Then, place your smartphone face down on your desk or inside your work bag so you can focus on your CEBS studies.
- Experiment with studying while listening to meditation music or nature sounds. It could help you stay relaxed and focused while you learn.
- If you find silence is golden for your study efforts or you’re studying in a noisy environment, try using noise canceling headphones to help you concentrate.
- Sign up for a CEBS Online Study Group for access to helpful study tools and the opportunity to connect with your instructor and peers.
